There are TWO COMPETELY DIFFERENT BOOKS, with different contents, and different publishers being sold by Amazon under the same title. The paperback book, which I purchased, is a COMPLETE CON JOB! It has a few photographs of the WORST QUALITY reproduction I have ever seen in a supposedly professional publication--my office photocopier does a much better job copying photos. But what I consider even more appalling is the text, which purported to be -- but was NOT -- the full text of Curtis's monumental 20-volume opus on the American Indian, covering 70 or 80 individual tribes, including the Hopi, the Zuni, and many other tribes including ones in California, Washington, Oregon, and Alaska. Curtis revolutionized the "study" of Native Americans, whom other authors in his time, including "professional" anthropologists, treated with contempt and believed to be an inferior "race". Curtis, on the other hand, viewed the tribes he got to know with great respect and compassion, spending enough time with many tribes to get to know them well and becoming a devoted advocate for the better and fairer treatment of all Native Americans. I was looking forward to reading Curtis's ground-breaking observations and insights. However, instead of containing Curtis's text on the 70-80 tribes he photographed and wrote about, this book has text on only 3 tribes: the Navajo, the Apache, and the Jicarilla! I would NEVER have purchased this book had I known it contained text on only a tiny fraction of the tribes Curtis wrote about. There is NOTHING to recommend about this paperback book!
I have not seen the hardcover but I believe, from reading the reviews here, that it actually has the complete photos from Curtis's opus, apparently reproduced well but in small size and little or no text. Amazon should NOT combine reviews for the hardcover and paperback books because they are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT PUBLICATIONS in every way!

The North American Indian Edward S Curtis 9781375012331 Books Reviews

Beautiful artwork! The print and photos could be a little crisper (maybe larger copy would be easier to see). Curtis was such an incredible artist and represents the Native American in tasteful and respectful way.
This is a great collection of the photographic collection which Edward S. Curtis amassed while gathering a tremendous amount of information about the native North American Indians. His eye through the camera gives insight into the real people of this nation. Beautifully put together, it introduces the reader to a large number of virtually unknown/uncommon Indian Tribes. While the paperback version is adequate, it is extremely large and hard to view the pictures without putting undue stress on the binding. The hardcover edition might be a better option, but even better would be the volume edition.
Unfortunately, these photos of views of the Native American that you will see no where else are reproduced in a tiny format. Otherwise, magical and unforgettable depictions of Indians before encroaching White so-called civilization wiped them and their way of life out.
WOW! This is amazing, for anyone who has read about this influential photographer, this is a must have book. This book contains his complete folios. I wish the book was a bigger size, as a table top, coffee table book size. I would love to see some of these photos a bit bigger. But it is amazing to hold the culmination of all of his work in one book. The sacrifices to create this work was incredible.
Always wanted to see the original volumes from Curtis, but till i do this was a great way to satisfy my history for the time period. Using a magnifier glass for details in some pictures will help until you can see the full size volumes. This man gave his whole life to the cause, something that was overlooked by most historians of his time and continues today. I don't want to get all political in my opinion of a book that captured the ongoing eradication of indian culture during the books formative years or weather you see this as wrong as it applies to native Americans in general. This is a piece of history and that is what it gives, a picture view of a culture we still don't really appreciate !
While I am pleased to see so many of Curtis's images in a single book, I bought this with the hope of sketching some of the portraits. There is hardly any contrast and hardly any detail. Everything is soft and dark. I can't see enough detail to draw from. I would have happily paid more for better quality images. It is a disappointing purchase.
Really great compendium with lots of quality pictures from the original twenty volumes, but... I believe the book is too small (actually pocket size), some of the pictures are just thumbnails. I was expecting full page pics, a little bit disappointing.
