This is the unabridged audiobook of Peter S. Beagle's classic fantasy novel, read by the author. It was recorded at MondoMedia Studios in San Francisco by Jim Lively, and co-produced by Connor Cochran and Jim Lively.
For 19 years, Jonathan Rebeck has hidden from the world within the confines of the Bronx's enormous Yorkchester Cemetery, making an abandoned mausoleum his secret home. His life is not an empty one. He can speak with the newly dead - as they pass from life to wherever spirits truly go - providing comfort, an ear, understanding, and even the occasional game of chess. But now Mr. Rebeck's reclusive existence is changing, disrupted by events and emotions beyond his control. An impossible love has blossomed between two ghosts, and his own secrets have been pierced by a living woman whose heart cries out for resurrection. Helped along by a cynical talking raven and a mysterious Cuban guard, Campos, these four souls must learn the true difference between life and death, and make choices that really are forever.
Told with an elegiac wisdom, Peter S. Beagle's first novel is a timeless work of fantasy, imbued with hope and wonder, sorrow and joy, and a surprising sense of humor. This updated edition contains the author's final revisions, and stands as the definitive version of an enduring modern classic.
A Fine and Private Place (Audible Audio Edition) Peter S Beagle Conlan Press Books
I would say "Peter Beagle has done it again.", but that would be technically inaccurate, since this was his first publication - I just happened to read it after I had read four other books by him. Fundamentally, the book was astounding in its depth, originality, and overall ethereal quality - with a greater level of astonishment for me when I recall that the writer was in his early 20's when it was published! The plot elements are as fresh today as they were in the period in which the book was set (mid 20th century) - with thoughtful and penetrating examination of the multiple meanings of life, death, and everything in between. Peter's unique vision and characterization of what follows our mortal lives on earth is both externally and internally consistent. All told using a smooth and polished storytelling style that belies the then-young age of the author. The characters are extraordinary, and getting to know them is a treat.
Overall, it was an extraordinary reading experience, that pushed me through all kinds of emotions throughout the book - joy, sadness, and wonder - sometimes all three at the same time.

A Fine and Private Place (Audible Audio Edition) Peter S Beagle Conlan Press Books Reviews
This was a strange book, but fun to read. I tried to find some deep meaning, but discovered little. There was a bit of humor in it, which I enjoyed. Interesting to note that the author was barely out of his teenage years when he wrote it.
Author of the Last Unicorn but didn't enjoy this one as much. Still a pretty little story. I'm not sure I would agree it's a children's book, but that's sort of in the eye of the beholder.
Terrific classic
Peter S. Beagle is one of my favorite High Fantasy writers. Read
this book ages ago, and lost my copy of the book, thus the re-order.
It was worth it, for the Raven, for Laura and Mrs. Klapper.
If Peter Beagle is the author, this consumer is buying whatever he is selling.
A HIGH Five out of a Five ratings.
No, it's not "The Last Unicorn", but you can't recreate the best book in the world, so who cares? "A Fine and Private Place" is incredibly winning, philosophical, funny, and poignant. It's about two ghosts who find the love they've been looking for all their lives...after their lives have ended. They're befriended by Mr. Rebeck, the old recluse living in the cemetary, a wise-cracking raven, and a strong-willed widow. It's Beagle's trademark to combine incredibly real, well-rounded, however eccentric, characters with incredibly beautiful, insightful prose. This book is no exception!
Of all the books I've read this season "A Fine and Private Place" is my favorite..... I read it a long time ago and decided to revisit it..I'm glad I did....it has just the right amount of mystery and magic....mirth and merriment....wonderful characters .... lyrical writing with passages that make me laugh aloud ....a heavenly book filled with earthy and unearthly love.....exploration of the lives.... and eternal amorous complications led by the living and the dead....this is a fine and private place to roam for hours....
Peter Beagle is a fine man kind and gentle. He is a brilliant writer. I admire his mind and ability to feel.
