IN few words I wish to state what are not and what are my reasons for writing this book.
1. It is not that I have any quarrel or controversy with any member of the Masonic Order. No one of them can justly accuse me of any personal ill-will or unkindness.
2. It is not because I am fond of controversy--I am not. Although I have been compelled to engage in much discussion, still I have always dreaded and endeavored to avoid the spirit and even the form of controversy.
3. It is not because I disregard the sensibility of Freemasons upon the question of their pet institution, and am quite willing to arouse their enmity by exposing it. I value the good opinion and good wishes of Freemasons as I do those of other men, and have no disposition to capriciously or wantonly assail what they regard with so much favor.
4. It is not because I am willing, if I can dutifully avoid it, to render any member of the Fraternity odious. But my reasons are
1. I wish, if possible, to arrest the spread of this great evil, by giving the public, at least, so much information upon this subject as to induce them to examine and understand the true character and tendency of the institution.
2. I wish, if possible, to arouse the young men who are Freemasons, to consider the inevitable consequences of such a horrible trifling with the most solemn oaths, as is constantly practiced by Freemasons. Such a course must, and does, as a matter of fact, grieve the Holy Spirit, sear the conscience, and harden the heart.
3. I wish to induce the young men who are not Freemasons "to look before they leap," and not be deceived and committed, as thousands have been, before they were at all aware of the true nature of the institution of Freemasonry.
4. I, with the many, have been remiss in suffering a new generation to grow up in ignorance of the character of Freemasonry, as it was fully revealed to us who are now old. We have greatly erred in not preserving and handing down to the rising generation the literature upon this subject, with which we were made familiar forty years ago. For one, I must not continue this remissness.
5. Because I know that nothing but correct information is wanting to banish this institution from wholesome society. This has been abundantly proven. As soon as Freemasons saw that their secrets were made public, they abandoned their lodges for very shame. With such oaths upon their souls, they could not face the frown of an indignant public, already aware of their true position.
6. Freemasons exhort each other to maintain a dignified silence and are exhorted not to enter into controversy with opposers of Freemasonry. The reasons are obvious to those who are informed. We know why they are silent if they are so, and why they will not enter the field of controversy and attempt to justify their institution. Let anyone examine the question and he will see why they make no attempt to justify Freemasonry as it is revealed in the books from which I have quoted. I greatly desire to have the public, and especially the church of Christ, understand what Freemasonry is. Then let them act as duty requires.
7. Should I be asked why I have not spoken out upon this subject before, I reply that until the question was sprung upon us in this place a year ago, I was not at all aware that Freemasonry had been disinterred and was alive, and stalking abroad over the face of the whole land.
8. This book contains the numbers published in the Independent last year. These are revised, enlarged and rearranged. To these are added eight numbers not heretofore published.
9. I have said in the body of the work, and say also in this preface, that I have no pecuniary intent in the sale of this work. I have not written for money, nor for fame. I shall get neither for my pains. I desire only to do good.

Have to read it in parts. It's a book one have to read a bit here n there.

Glad to read something on this subject from one of the stalwarts of the faith, Dr. Finney. I would urge anyone who is weighing the pros and cons of the matter to read this book.
Charles Finney makes and excellent argument against the teachings of Freemasonry. He gives a clear warning that the teachings of Freemasonry, and their practices and principles are not compatible with Biblical Christianity. Freemasonry has their own plan of salvation apart from God's Son, as can be clearly seen in the rituals of the 3rd degree (master mason), as well as in their burial ceremony these teach that all "good masons" can attain the "great lodge in the sky" through their good works. This is an old scheme of the enemy to confuse people, and is clearly not taught in the Bible. Salvation is only by God's grace and forgiveness, not by following the example of a legendary mythical man (Hiram Abif). Much can be said on this topic,,,just read the book and it is a good start in your quest for truth regarding Freemasonry's teachings.
This may be OLD, but it is definitely for anyone today who is involved with Free Masons. I certainly recommend reading this work.
I am just now finishing up this book, and I have been fairly pleased with it. I have been trying to understand more about the mason organization especially since my great grandfather was a high ranking mason, most of the preachers in my hometown are masons, and I have many friends who are masons or who have been asked to become masons. The first book that I read on the subject was a book by the name of Mysterious Monuments written by Texe Marrs and the second book was The New World Order by Epperson. Out of all of these books, I would probably recommend Finney's book the least. I believe if I had to do it over I would have started with Epperson's book even though the timeline that the cult leaders were presenting at that time failed it is still a very informative book, I believe I would follow it up with this book, and I would finish with Texe Marrs book (just because this book gives you signs to recognize the cultish beliefs that the other two books establish). This book focuses mainly on the so-called Christian freemasonry. Once you read this book though, you will find out that there is no such thing as Christian freemasonry because masons take oaths to cover up the crimes of other masonic brothers. We can all agree that this is a sin therefore unchristian. In addition to this, Finney brings up the fact that Christians are not supposed to take oaths especially oaths upon the penalty of death. This is a fact not emphasized in church much anymore but it used to be very important to the early christians in this nation. He focuses on this point for quite a while; however if you can get through this point repeated over and over, he will get to the universalist nature of the masonic cult. He will also cover how some of the higher ranks of freemasonry consider the church as the enemy. Marrs and Epperson take this point a little further to their belief that masons are actually a satanistic cult when you get to the higher levels. They really make a good point with solid evidence. I think it is good to read this book because Finney was a mason at one time. Also Finney was one of the leading preachers in the great awakening here in the United States. It is good to have a source with such credibility. This is not to knock the credibility of the other books because Texe Marrs is an author who has one of the highest registered I.Q. scores in our nation. Therefore, he is not an idiot. Finney and Marrs differ on a point of whether george washington was an active mason. George Washington denied this accusation in a personal letter that Finney reproduces in his book; however, George did admit that he had attended a few meetings throughout his lifetime. The influx of the illuminati (which George Washington feared) into freemasonry has really warped masonry over the past two centuries; however, they are a very big part of freemasonry. They are some of the main leaders of freemasonry currently so I say that the illuminati and freemasonry should now be considered one and the same. Well, I think this lets you get the point of the book. I think it is an important read in a Christian's searching of what exactly is the true nature of freemasonry.
Recommended reading for those who either have relatives involved or for those contemplating membership in the organization. Mr. Finney, a former member himself, reveals the exact wording of each of the required sworn oaths and the true meaning behind them, plus much, much more. Interesting, and difficult to lay down once you begin reading.
